So Pumped

My insulin pump is now fully functional. I haven’t had to have an injection since Monday and I have had a few heart stopping moments when I have thought “OMG I haven’t had my insulin” but I think that is natural when I’ve been injecting for so long. I have still got some tweaking to do with the help of my diabetes nurse at Addenbrookes Hospital to make sure I am getting the correct insulin/carbohydrate ratio at meal times and that my background insulin is working sufficiently. I speak to my nurse every day and they have a great out of hours service I can call in emergencies.
On my first evening on the pump I had bad abdominal pain and my blood sugars were raised due to a stomach bug. I called the OOH service and got great advice and support. I used try and deal with these kinds of issues on my own but I won’t do that anymore. The service is there for a reason and had I not used it maybe I would have ended up going in to A&E
The nurse explained how to increase my background insulin temporarily by 125% and talked me through all the steps I had to take to stay out of Diabetic Ketoacidosis. After a few hours my blood sugar was in target and I was feeling a lot better.
I am feeling confident using the pump and I love that it is very small and discreet. I wish I had got it years ago!
